Senator Barack Obama's longtime pastor says the outcry of criticism surrounding his controversial sermons is an attack on the black church. Rev. Jeremiah Wright addressed the Washington media today. He said the black church is merely misunderstood by the dominant culture in the U.S. Wright also rejected those who labeled him unpatriotic, saying he served six years in the military. Video clips of Wright's sermons have circulated on TV and the Internet and affected Obama's campaign. The President of Afghanistan is not injured after fleeing a weekend assassination attempt. President Hamid Karzai attended a ceremony marking the 16 anniversary of Afghanistan's victory over the Soviet invasion when suspected Taliban militants unleashed gunfire into the crowd. One person was killed and nine others were wounded. Karzai was escorted from the scene surrounded by bodyguards. Later, he appeared on TV, saying several suspects had been arrested. Those long-awaited rebate checks will be arriving to some U.S. taxpayers today. The checks will go to people who chose to have their rebates directly deposited into their bank accounts. The government's paper checks will start going out next Friday. That's a week earlier than expected. The extra cash is intended to help Americans cope with rising gas and fuel prices during a lagging economic period. Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean says one of the Democrats must drop out of the presidential race by June. Dean says that doing so would unify the party by the convention in August and win the election in November. The chairman didn't say which candidate should drop out, but he said it should happen after primary voters have been to the polls in June.
