Description: Ministers have expressed various views on the landslide victory achieved by the Freedom Alliance at the Eastern Provincial polls. Minister Maithripala Sirisena declared that the victory further strengthens the government's programmes. The alliance registered a victory in a UNP stronghold. It was the UNP, which secured victories in the Province during the past. But this poll indicates that a majority had cast their votes in support of the government for the victory of the President. All local and foreign monitors have claimed that the election was peaceful and fair. As such, they consider it as a democratic victory. Minister Sirisena totally refuted allegations made by the UNP, which claims the election was corrupt. Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva stressed that the victory secured by the United Peoples' Freedom Alliance in the east was a victory of the people. The people and the country were victorious at the Eastern polls. It was a severe blow for the UNP and the LTTE. They attempted to sabotage the election and prevent the votes of the Alliance by exploding bombs. But, he added that they were unable to intimidate the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim civilians who voted the Alliance into power. Minister John Seneviratne said a free and fair poll in which democracy triumphed defeating communalism has successfully drawn to a close. The Alliance can be satisfied over this major victory. The UNP campaigned against the high cost of living. But the results explicitly indicate that the civilians had rejected it. All civilians had voted in support of the Alliance. The Minister said they have appreciated the development, which is taking place in their Province. Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said the Eastern victory was an endorsement of the President's policies in a Province where all the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities live. The win indicated that the communities can live in unity, peacefully and under one government. The UNP and the Muslim Congress through organisations loyal to them expressed various misleading views. But the people have finally taken an important decision. Minister Anura Yapa pointed out that this was the 15th defeat suffered by UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. The people, whether in the South, the East or the North, had not endorsed their policies. The Minister was optimistic that the victory will augur well for the future of the country. Minister Pavithra Wanniarachci said the government was grateful to all parties who supported the victory of the Alliance. The LTTE's desire was to undermine the victory achieved in the East and build a separate state. She opined that the UNP--LTTE coalition had been defeated. The President was developing the country and enthroning democracy. The Eastern election was a part of it. She thanked the Easterners who helped in the victory of the Alliance and expressed her gratitude to the Armed Forces and the Police as well as government officials who worked hard for the conduct of a peaceful poll. Minister Dilan Perera pointed out that the Eastern victory was a clear endorsement of the government's programme by the civilians sans communal differences. He was of the view that it will further strengthen the government. He also viewed this victory as an effort to rule the Province through elected representatives. What the government should do is to devolve maximum power and strengthen the Province.
