The United Peoples' Freedom Alliance has received a significant victory at the Eastern Provincial Council election held yesterday. The Freedom Alliance secured 20 seats of the Council, which also includes the two bonus seats.
The Freedom Alliance received an outstanding win in the Batticaloa and Digamadulla Districts. The Alliance captured six seats from the Batticaloa District as against the four seats received by the UNP. The Tamil Democratic National Front secured one seat. The total number of votes polled by the Freedom Alliance in the Batticaloa District was 195,341. It amounts to 58.9%. The UNP received only 58,602. The Tamil Democratic National Front polled 7714 votes in the Batticaloa District.
Except for one Electoral Division of the Digamadulla District, the United Peoples' Freedom Alliance consolidated its power in all other electorates. The Alliance polled 144,247 votes from this District, securing eight seats. The total number of votes polled by the UNP was 125,272 votes. It won six seats from the Digamadulla District. The JVP received 4745 votes from the District.
The United National Party secured a win in the Trincomalee District with a small percentage. It received 70,858 votes, winning five seats. The Freedom Alliance polled 59,298 votes securing four seats. The JVP was able to win a seat from the Trincomalee District after receiving 4266 votes. Accordingly, the United Peoples' Freedom Alliance received the highest number of seats in the Eastern Provincial Council after polling 308,886 votes. The UNP polled 250,732 votes. The total number of votes received by the JVP was 9390 while the Tamil Democratic National Front had received 7814 votes. |
